From the beginning of his life in southern California, Bill learned to work hard. His father was in the military, and his mother was also working. He took charge and cared for his younger siblings through all the highs and lows. Moving from a rented home to a rented home 13 times in the first 16 years of his life, he never let the changes get to him, and he persevered. At Paraclete High School, he excelled on the football field, scholastically, and on the student council, where he was treasurer for three years. Although this All-American footballer had many scholarships for his athletic and scholastic prowess, a broken ankle ended his football career and kept him close to home at Antelope Valley College, where he would eventually meet his future wife Marianna in freshman biology.
Searching for a better math program, Bill transferred to California State Polytechnic in Pomona, CA, where he received his bachelor’s in applied mathematics. Like most college students, he worked through college and was a meat cutter at Stater Brother’s Markets. As a meat cutter, he joined the meat cutter’s union and trained to become a top-notch meat cutter. In his last years of college, Bill started the insurance industry’s actuarial exams to become an actuary. Through the trials of the exam, Bill decided to go another route and sidelined his position as an actuary. In turn, he decided to graduate college with honors instead, marry his wife Marianna, and move to Spokane, WA, in 1992. Once in Spokane, the two lovebirds started their new life with Bill working two jobs. One is at Waddell and Reed as a financial advisor selling securities, life, and health insurance, and the other is a bartender on the weekends.
Meanwhile, Marianna was a pediatric dental assistant for DR Moffitt, D.D.S. In 1996, Bill started Boyd Financial and sold auto, home, life, and health insurance. Two years later, they welcomed their first child, Mary, and soon after, Rebekah, Billy, and Ryan joined the family. Since starting Boyd Financial over 27 years ago, Bill has grown the company into Boyd Insurance Brokerage Inc., as it’s known to 12 employees and millions in premiums. As an insurance broker working with multiple carriers, he honed his skills at representing his clients by defending them against inaccurate claims from large insurance carriers and discussing different issues in and out of the office.
Since arriving in Spokane, Bill has volunteered in multiple non-profits and church board groups in our community. He has been treasurer of 3 different Christian churches for over 14 years and has coached his children’s baseball, football, and wrestling teams. Bill also served as treasurer of the Inland Northwest Pop Warner League for multiple years. He was also president of the Mt. Spokane Mead Pop Warner group (MSMPW), and transitioned to Mt. Spokane Mead Youth Football group (MSMYF) in his later volunteer years. Through his presidency on those boards, he expanded the respective programs by working with over 100 volunteers and thousands of helpful parents to the successful program it is today. MSMYF went from 1 team to 16 football teams and 12 cheer squads.
The next big step is Bill’s running for Washington’s Insurance Commissioner. This time, he needs your help. He needs your vote to bring change to Washington’s industry and defend all Washingtonians from illegal insurance actions. Vote for Boyd today for better insurance tomorrow.
